Metaanalysis of the Relationship between Exercise and Mental Health

Introduction

Exercise is known to have a positive impact on physical health. However, recent studies have also shown that exercise can improve mental health outcomes such as reduced anxiety and depression, improved cognitive function, and increased well-being.

Methods

A literature search was conducted using online databases such as PubMed, Medline, and PsycINFO. The following inclusion criteria were used: studies had to be published in peer-reviewed journals, written in English, and focus on the effects of exercise on mental health. A total of 45 studies were included in the metaanalysis.

Results

The metaanalysis found that regular exercise was associated with significant reductions in symptoms of anxiety and depression. Additionally, the effects of exercise on mental health were greater for those who engaged in higher intensity exercise, longer duration exercise, and more frequent exercise. Furthermore, age, gender, and baseline mental health status did not moderate the relationship between exercise and mental health.

In conclusion, this metaanalysis suggests that exercise is a promising intervention for improving mental health outcomes. Regular exercise, especially high intensity, long duration, and frequent exercise, can lead to significant reductions in symptoms of anxiety and depression. Future research should aim to investigate the causal relationship between exercise and mental health outcomes, as well as exploring the potential mechanisms underlying this relationship.
