The First Time I Spoke English

Introduction

It was in my first year of middle school that I had my first English class. I remember feeling excited but also quite nervous, knowing that I was going to learn a completely new language from scratch. I had only had a few English classes in elementary school, but they were mostly focused on learning basic words like \"hello\" and \"thank you.\" Now, in middle school, things were going to get more serious. I was going to learn how to speak, write, and understand English. It was both daunting and thrilling.

The First Class

I walked into the classroom, feeling a bit intimidated by the sea of unfamiliar faces, all seated in neat rows. Some kids were already chatting away in English, and I felt a little envious. I took my seat, feeling nervous but determined. The teacher came in and greeted us, and I remember feeling a little relieved when I realized she was a kind and patient woman. The first few minutes of class passed by in a blur. The teacher explained some basic grammar rules, and we repeated after her. Then, she asked us to introduce ourselves in English. My heart started racing, and I stumbled over my words. I barely managed to say my name and where I was from before my mind went blank. I could feel the eyes of my classmates on me, and I wished I could sink into my seat.

Making Progress

Despite my shaky start, I was determined to improve. I started practicing English every day, listening to songs and watching TV shows in English, and practicing with my classmates. Slowly but surely, I started to feel more comfortable with the language. By the end of the school year, I was able to have simple conversations in English and understand most of what was being said in class. Looking back, I realize that the first time I spoke English was a pivotal moment in my life. It was the beginning of a journey that would take me to new places, help me make new friends, and open up new opportunities. Yes, it was scary and a little uncomfortable, but it was also thrilling and exhilarating. And I'm so glad I took that first step.
